Deshani Florance (Senewiratne)
Mentors
Deshani Florance graduated from the University of California, Irvine, where she majored in Political Science. She had dedicated much of the time in her home country of Sri Lanka working locally with social enterprise businesses. She has helped cultivate and build the human capital talent pool capacity for the social sector and provided assistance with for-profit, non-profit and quasi-public organizations that encompass it. Additionally, she spent a year abroad studying and working in Florence, Italy with UNESCO Centre of Florence and Oxfam-Italia. While in Italy, she was a reporter for the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation for Human Rights, where she conducted interviews and reported on different social enterprise and business issues facing the community. She is a professional with a strong understanding of social enterprise startup businesses. She has a vast network and a deep understanding of community economic development work, and experience working in the field of leadership development. While working, she became very interested in policy drafting, law reform, and advocacy work. In the Fall of 2014, Deshani will be a Teach for America participant in Philadelphia, while pursuing a Masters of Science in Education and Public Policy at the University of Pennsylvania.
