Fatima Al-Banawi
Founder, The Other Story
Fellowship Programme
Fatima Al-Banawi is a social artist, actress, and storyteller from Saudi Arabia. She creates her artwork through a direct engagement with people and their personal life stories. Fatima began inviting people in her hometown, Jeddah, to share their stories with her in 2015 when she founded The Other Story, and has been using them as the basis of her live performance and video art series. Her passion for social development and dialogue led her to co-founding the Theatre of the Oppressed Jeddah Chapter in 2010 and staging one of its plays at Harvard University. She later also received training in the Undesirable Elements Theatre Method by Ping Chong & Company in New York City in 2015, yet another form of theatre that enabled her pursuit of deepening the conversation between social impact work and the arts. Fatima’s academic background with a Bachelor in Counseling Psychology from Effat University and a Masters in Theological Studies from Harvard has been foundational throughout this journey. In 2016, Fatima became internationally recognized for her debut in the award winning Saudi feature film, Barakah Meets Barakah, and has since continued to act as an instinctive response to her natural talent, with an incentive to reshape the public narrative about Saudi society, and a call to realizing our shared humanity.
