Her family escaped the Somali civil war in early 1990s, which has had a profound influence on her film interests and ambitions. She also broke into the digital world with youtube in 2012 with a viral video called "10 types of somali girls" at the time it was new for a muslim female to develop comedy driven work on the platform. She then applied to the Plural + film festival in 2014 with her film "3 things you should know about my hijab" where she was nominated for several awards and ended up winning three different international awards. Later she attended the Hamptons film festival in 2015 for her work.
