The UNESCO Youth Climate Action Network (YoU-CAN) is conducting a Study on “Youth Challenges and Actions in the Climate Crisis”, composed of an online survey and regional interviews with young people worldwide. The Study aims to better understand how youth are affected by climate change, what are their needs, and how they are taking action to address it.

Background:
The UNESCO Youth Climate Action Network (YoU-CAN) has identified a significant gap in understanding the nuanced ways in which climate change affects youth and how young people are actively responding to this global challenge. Comprehensive scientific climate reports are published regularly, yet the reports do not focus on youth or include young people in their analyses. Consequently, there is a lack of data on both the impact of climate change on young people and their actions to combat it, a concern shared by multiple youth organizations within YoU-CAN. The scarcity of data hampers efforts to comprehensively address youth-specific vulnerabilities and harness their innovative approaches in climate action. Bridging this information gap is vital for tailoring effective policies, programs, and actions that empower and amplify the voices of young climate activists worldwide.

Objective:
The primary objective of this study is to (1) unveil challenges faced by youth in dealing with climate change, as well as to (2) capture their engagement experiences in current climate action initiatives. The data collected will be utilized to identify the gaps and needs among youth populations, with a view to informing the development of more effective response projects and solutions. Additionally, the survey findings will contribute to YoU-CAN and UNESCO’s understanding of youth perspectives and experiences on climate change and inform their future actions in this critical area. Furthermore, the survey and follow-up interviews will provide a basis for a YoU-CAN knowledge product. The purpose of this is to contribute to and enhance the global dialogue on youth-led climate action.

Scope:
The survey will focus on youth aged 18-35 years old from diverse geographical, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. It will aim to gather a diversity of youth insights into their perceptions, experiences, challenges and actions related to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts across the different regions of the world.

Components:
– Online Survey Form (20-25 min) – Open
– Regional and Sub-regional Interviews – Not started

Online Survey Form Deadline: 25 August, 23.59 CET
